If you’re wandering through Ueno Park and craving a serene retreat, look no further than Kissako, a charming cafe nestled at 4-59 Uenokoen, Taito City, Tokyo. This delightful teahouse embodies the essence of traditional Japanese culture, providing a perfect respite from the bustling city atmosphere.

Kissako is renowned for its exceptional selection of Japanese tea and delicate sweets. Guests can indulge in a variety of seasonal offerings, with fan favorites like anmitsu – a refreshing dessert featuring agar jelly, sweet beans, and syrup – paired with delicious, handmade ice cream. The blend of flavors is simply divine, and a creative pairing of both dishes promises a symphony of taste that leaves a lasting impression.

As you step inside, the warm and inviting atmosphere envelops you – the traditional decor, complete with tatami mats and ambient lighting, makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a tranquil haven. The attentive staff, adorned in beautiful kimonos, enhance the overall experience, greeting you with a delightful cup of tea as you settle in.

According to Hannah Lafargue, it's “the perfect spot to take a break,” reflecting the cafe’s ideal location just a stone's throw from Ueno Park. Another satisfied patron, Tschi G, shared a sentiment that resonates with many: “One of the best culinary experiences we’ve had so far in Tokyo.” The harmonious blend of matcha tea and mochi gold, preferred by many visitors, leaves them raving about the taste and presentation.

For those venturing here for lunch, the extensive lunch sets, beautifully themed around Sakura, introduce a delightful new layer to your dining experience. However, be advised that the menu may pose a bit of a challenge even to native Japanese speakers, as indicated by Sak Ioka. Yet, it’s well worth the effort, as echoed by Chris Bull, who found joy in the offerings despite some dietary preferences among their group.

The ambiance is further praised by Hiromi Yoneda, who delightfully noted the “nice atmosphere” while savoring the delicious Japanese tea and sweets. At Kissako, every visit is not just a meal; it's a true exploration of Japanese culture, flavor, and hospitality.

Come and discover for yourself how Kissako weaves a spell of comfort and indulgence, making it a must-visit cafe not only for the local denizens but for any traveler eager to embrace the beauty of Japan.

A well situated teahouse with a warm and quiet atmosphere. Both the anmitsu and ice cream were excellent, so I'm certain the combination of both is also delicious ! It's the perfect spot to take a break while visiting Ueno park.

One of the best culinary experiences we’ve had so far in Tokyo. When we arrived, we had to put our name on a waiting list. After about 30 minutes, we were seated and greeted with a lovely tea. We could choose from four different dessert options. We both had matcha tea and mochi, and both were absolutely delicious. The interior had a classic Japanese style, and the waitress wore a kimono with zōri sandals. We were the only foreign guests, which made the experience feel even more special. We struggled a little with unfolding the mochi from the leaf, but the waitress was keen to help us. Thank you for this wonderful experience!

We have often eaten at the neighbouring restaurant, but on this occasion it was very busy and we were with a handicapped friend, we choose the tea room. As this was lunch, they were offering lunch sets. Three Sakura themed lunches were on offer. We choose one of each. Our friend is not keen on Japanese food,so she as not happy. We were.

We had the matcha, peach, and strawberry ice cream cones. I really liked my matcha ice cream and my friend enjoyed her peach, but my other friend was disappointed with her strawberry ice cream. She was expecting a more soft serve texture, but the texture was more solid. The cones are just regular thin cones, crispy but not a lot of flavor. Overall a decent place for ice cream.
